The UHCW Library and Knowledge Services are here to support clinical staff at UHCW with a wide range of resources and services tailored to your information needs.

Have you recently joined the Trust on rotation? Need evidence to support patient care? Moving into a research role? Wherever you are in your career, the UHCW Library team is on hand to help you access and use high-quality evidence in practice.

This guide highlights key library resources and services for locally employed doctors, including online resources, point-of-care tools and training opportunities.

BrowZine

Browse, read and monitor full text scholarly journals via the BrowZine App. Subscribe to your favourite titles via dedicated bookshelves and save full text articles to read at your leisure.

e-Learning

BMJ Case Reports

UHCW Library holds a subscription to BMJ Case Reports and our team can assist with preparing and submitting your case reports. To publish in this journal, you will need our UHCW fellowship code which we provide when supporting you with the process. Contact us via library@uhcw.nhs.uk for more information.

At UHCW Library we have a whole range of e-resources available to support all clinical staff in the trust. We've highlighted some key resources for doctors below, but we also provide access to other resources like Bookboon (for eBooks and podcasts to develop your soft skills), MAH CompleteRoyal Marsden Manual, and more. See our Online Resources menu on the Library homepage to explore the full range.

ClinicalKey

A simple-to-use search tool that provides access to over 1500 full-text e-books & 600 peer-reviewed journals published by Elsevier Science as well as international guidelines, including NICE. ClinicalKey also features an in-built 'presentation maker' which generates slides of image content for you to add to your PowerPoint presentations in a couple of clicks. There are also extensive clinical topic summaries available to help doctors answer their clinical questions.

Oxford Medicine Online

Health Education England (HEE) have funded access to the suite of medical handbooks by Oxford University Press. All titles in the Oxford Medical Handbooks series are included, as well as the ‘Emergencies In…’ series and more. UHCW Library currently have access to 220+ titles.

Trip / Trip Pro

Trip is a clinical search engine designed to help doctors find high-quality research evidence. No special searching skills are required and search results are grouped according to levels of evidence. Available via an OpenAthens login or when using Trip on a NHS networked computer.

At UHCW, we have access to two clinical decision-making tools: BMJ Best Practice and DynaMed. These are designed to help doctors access the best available evidence at the point of care. Clinical Key - mentioned on the previous tab - can also be used as a clinical decision-making tool.

BMJ Best Practice

Brought to you by Health Education England (HEE), BMJ Best Practice gives doctors quick and easy access to authoritative information to underpin clinical decision-making. Access the latest evidence-based research, guidelines and expert opinion to offer step-by-step guidance on diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention.

BMJ Best Practice is updated daily and is available to all NHS staff online and offline via an app. Visit bestpractice.bmj.com for further information.

DynaMed

DynaMed is a clinical decision-making tool that provides doctors with evidence-based information at the point of care. Available online, or via an app, DynaMed allows users to search, browse, and follow the topics and specialties that matter most to them, and get quick answers to their clinical questions.

If you need to carry out more complex, reproduceable searches to inform research, UHCW Library provides access to a range of different healthcare databases. We've listed a few key medical databases here, but you can explore the whole range of tools available to you via our Online Resources page. This list includes databases such as EMCAREHMICAMEDPubMedCochrane Library and more.

Medline

Medline is the leading database for biomedical and health sciences literature. It includes over 30 million articles from academic journals covering medicine, pharmacy, dentisty, biomedical sciences, nursing and more.

EMBASE

EMBASE is a major biomedical database that indexes over 7,500 international peer-reviewed journals. It is well-known for its coverage of pharmacological topics as well as all aspects of biomedical research.

ProQuest

ProQuest provides access to PsycInfo and PsycArticles as well as Medline. Search thousands of full text journal articles, doctoral dissertations, images and more.

CINAHL

CINAHL Ultimate is the world’s largest database of literature on nursing and allied health topics and is the definitive choice for any healthcare students, professionals and researchers conducting literature searches in these subjects.

Our free Knowledge Skills Training is available to all UHCW staff and students on placement. From getting to grips with using the Library catalogue to literature searching, critical appraisal and beyond, we’re here to help you make the best of the evidence to support you in practice.

What do the sessions involve?

Our core training sessions focus on skills relating to 'Finding the Evidence' and 'Understanding the Evidence'. You can find brief course descriptions on the training section of the library website.

The sessions involve a mixture of presentations, hands-on practical activities and group work where appropriate. Support materials will be available for you to use after the session. Certificates of attendance can be provided if requested.

How are the sessions delivered?

One-to-one appointments are available either in person or via Microsoft Teams depending on staff availability. Group sessions will be held via Teams in the first instance but can be booked in person with sufficient notice.

CEBIS is our Clinical Evidence Based Information Service

Our team of information specialists work closely with clinical staff to embed the use of research evidence in day-to-day practice. So whether you have a question about the best treatment option for a particular patient, a difference of opinion with a colleague about a clinical intervention, or need to ensure you are up to date on the latest research in your area – the CEBIS team have you covered.

CEBIS can support you and your team by:

  • Carrying out literature searches to support your clinical decision making, service changes and practice improvements.
  • Providing the evidence you need to write patient information leaflets, guidelines, or standard operating procedures.
  • Facilitating journal clubs or attending ward rounds to undertake “rapid searches” so you have access to evidence when you need it.
  • Offering tailored current awareness bulletins to help keep you up-to-date.
  • Helping clinical research staff develop search strategies for systematic reviews, research papers or conference papers.

Health Information for Patients

Providing patients with high-quality, easy to understand health information means they are more able to give informed consent and play a more active role in their treatment.
